A Life Lived Beautifully: Sarah Kim

Today I am excited to introduce you to Sarah Kim! I recently had the joy of working with Sarah to hand-letter the new 2016 "Live Life Beautifully" Journal! I first found Sarah through Instagram and immediately could see Christ shining through every post. Her love for Jesus and the Word is evident, and her ability to create Scripture into art is inspiring. She reflects her Creator through faithfully creating. You will be incredibly blessed by her interview as well as following her on social media! She is a blessing and a true woman after God's heart.

Introduce yourself like we are having a cup of coffee together. :) What kind of coffee/tea would you drink?

Hello, hello! So glad to meet you! My name is Sarah and I’m sorry that my hair is such a mess ;) I’m doing my Masters in medical illustration but I like spending my evenings painting flowers or dabbling in calligraphy. Our soy lattes are on me today!!!

What is your definition of a "life lived beautifully"?

A life lived beautifully is a life that radiates with the glory of God. When Moses descends from Mount Sinai after talking to God, his face is literally glowing. Isn't that just the craziest thing you've ever heard? Of course, in the Old Testament, we’d be struck dead if we saw God’s holy face… but today, we’re able to experience His glory so closely. If we can live dying to ourselves and with our hands in surrender daily, there’s more room for God’s glory to work in our lives. And nothing is more beautiful than the fullness of His glory.

When did you start following Jesus?

I attended church my whole life without knowing the gospel. Talk about not having the ears to hear or the eyes to see! I always thought I was a good girl but it was during my undergrad that God slowly and painfully began revealing my sins. I started to see sin for what it really was and consequently, I finally understood grace. The cross suddenly meant so much more. God opened my eyes and shook my world!

What are some verses you constantly cling to and bring life to your soul?

There are too many!! But these are some of my favourites. They always remind me of the goodness of being called His child and into His Kingdom.

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Matthew 13:44

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9
But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 2 Corinthians 4:7

How do you integrate sharing the Gospel with creativity?

For me, it was so simple… it must’ve been the Spirit! I began doodling during Sunday sermons (eek, I promise it helps me focus!) and somehow, His words just jumped right off the page to me. I never really saw God’s Word as beautiful until I began doodling them out. It was a clear way for me to share the truth with others… and to show them that it is so good!

My full-time career is in biomedical communications; I visualize scientific data to educate and communicate. Whether I’m visualizing a new drug therapy or teaching the intricacies of the human body, I want it all to point back to our Creator. Science is only cool ‘cause He made it cool!

How did God direct you to start lettering? How do you intend to use your lettering in creative ways for the kingdom?

I finished my undergrad in Neurosciences and had no idea what to do. I took a break, got a part-time job at Starbucks, and decided to take a few college art courses. I had never done any art and so this was a way for me to explore something new. Little did I know that I’d be so blessed through art. It started off as daily doodles and someway, somehow, God grew it. He took my stubby little fingers and gave it a double portion of His grace haha! I am so in awe by Him when I read His Word. Similarly, I want my artwork to point people to who God is.

What life lessons are you learning in your current season of life?

I’m 23, unmarried, and still in school. It’s such a recipe for daydreaming and life planning! I asked God for a long time to show me what He was calling me to. “Call me, and I’ll do it Lord!” I was waiting for a grand voice to tell me my purpose in life… and yet, I’m learning that God needs me to be obedient in the little things first. Read the Word. Pray. Serve. Love the lost. I’m learning what spiritual discipline is so that I can be ready to hear Him when He speaks.

What are some books you are currently reading?

I serve on the college ministry as a leader and we’re currently reading through David Platt’s Follow Me. I’d say most of that book is highlighted or underlined… it has been convicting my slumbering spirit page after page!! I’m reminded that it is - more than anything else - an honour to take up my cross and follow Him.

If you could tell every woman reading this blog one thing God has laid on your heart, what would it be?

Try this with me. Imagine we are 1000 years into the future, standing (or flying, or floating, whatever!) beside our Father. There is a new heaven and a new earth. We are living in eternity… and there is a tiny little speck in front of us that represents our earthly lives. What really mattered to us back then? The Kingdom of Heaven was fast approaching… how did we spend our short time? What sorts of worries and stresses occupied our minds? How did we advance the gospel to the ends of the earth?

These sorts of thoughts really bring things back into perspective for me.
